This weekly clinic is run by our Health Promotion sister and offers screening for heart disease and advice and support for you about improving your health and preventing disease.
Heart disease - the risks
The heart, like any other pump, needs a good supply of oxygen. Over time the arteries become furred up or narrowed by fat deposited inside them.
Being male or having someone in the family with heart problems makes heart disease more likely; these risks can not be changed.
Other factors, such as eating a high fat diet, not exercising enough, being overweight, stress, and smoking, also make this narrowing more likely to happen. Fortunately, these can be avoided.
Help yourself to a healthier heart
Prevention is better than cure. Even if you've already been diagnosed with heart disease, making lifestyle changes can help you live a longer, healthier and more enjoyable life.
Adopting a healthier lifestyle is not about denying the things you enjoy, making vast changes such as joining a gym, becoming a vegetarian or eating nothing but 'health foods'. Small, easily achievable adaptations such as becoming more active in your everyday life and learning to enjoy fresh, wholesome food can make a tremendous difference to your wellbeing and improve the health of your heart.
Best of all, most of the steps improve several different risk factors. For example becoming more active helps to reduce your blood pressure, improves your cholesterol level and by boosting your metabolism, helps control your weight - all of which can significantly reduce your risk of coronary heart disease.
