Going Abroad?

Appointments for travel advice can be made with the Practice Nurses. Their aims are:

If you are going aboard and need to know what injections are needed for the countries that you are visiting, then an early visit to the practice nurse may save you time and money and even illness, which is what the vaccination is all about. You may be asked to fill in a form, which will be handed to the practice nurse before you see her.

Even if you book a late holiday, we can still advise you about accelerated courses of vaccination which may have to be completed on your return but will give some cover.

How much do vaccinations cost?

If possible we aim to give you your vaccinations free of charge if the NHS covers these fees. Occasionally we have to charge for the vaccine as in some cases this is not covered by the NHS. Our schedule of charges is here.

Remember that you may need to arrange supplies of any medication you're taking overseas as they may not be easily available at your destination. Certain groups of travellers need to take particular care - the very young, the elderly, those with pre-existing medical conditions, those with immunosuppression - and pregnant women. In all these situations the risk of infectious disease may be greater.

Keep a record of all your vaccinations together with your passport. Certain countries will require certificates of immunisations before they allow you entry.

You can find out reliable, up-to-date health information specific to your destination, including details of any current illness outbreaks, what to do if you're ill when abroad, what immunisations you might need and malaria advice, using the excellent Travel Health website. It also features Foreign Office advice about troublespots.

Further general travel information is available from the Department of Health.
