Dr Whitaker’s retirement
The time has come to hang up my stethoscope and call it a day at Didsbury Medical Centre. I officially finish on 31st August but due to recovery from illness I won’t be coming back to the practice before then.
In September last year I became the patient and not the doctor. I was diagnosed with a type of cancer called lymphoma. I have had excellent treatment from the specialists at Salford Royal and the chemo has done a fantastic job. I’m pleased to say I’ve had a very successful outcome and am getting stronger all the time.
Many of you have sent your best wishes. I really appreciate your thoughts, prayers and concern.
I started at Didsbury in August 1987 and many of you I will have known from day one! An even greater number I have got to know over the last 34 years. I have enjoyed my time at the practice, I have seen it grow with new staff and new doctors helping to deliver the very best care we can even in these very uncertain times.
I am very proud of all the practice staff who work tirelessly to give everybody a fair, equitable and quality service. Computers, videos and online access have all become a reality and the days of full waiting rooms with queues extending onto Belfield Road
seem a very distant memory.
I feel totally honored to be a part of so many families in Didsbury and I will miss the interaction with you all. There have been difficult times when illness and loss seem overwhelming and I hope I have been there for you and your family. There have also been many lighter moments which have certainly made busy days more enjoyable. I’ve not forgotten which children turned up in Manchester United shirts knowing I’m a true blue!!
I’m looking forward to my retirement but I will miss being a part of your lives moving forward. I wish you all the very best and I hope I have helped at least a little when you needed me.
Stay safe and keep well
Dr W
